He created a crystal pavilion (a glass hut) in the middle of the ocean (the ocean's navel) and resided there permanently. Whenever there was a crisis in the Buddhist teachings, a major ritual, or an invitation, he would come up to assist with full dedication. He was highly respected and revered by the people, which is why statues of him were created for worship and veneration, both in the form of Buddha images and amulets. Upagupta led Mara, the Evil One, to Mount Sumeru, then cast a decaying dog's carcass into an abyss and miraculously extended his sacred cloth girdle, binding Mara’s neck to the mountain. This binding lasted for seven years, seven months, and seven days.
