"มังกร" ถูกนำมาเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งปรากฏการณ์พิเศษ, คุณสมบัติของเทพ และสภาวะอันยิ่งใหญ่มากมายที่มนุษย์ได้นิยามออกมา อาทิเช่น พลังอำนาจ คุณธรรมอันสูงส่ง ความดีงาม ความเด็ดเดี่ยว ความยิ่งใหญ่ ความแข็งแกร่งความเป็นวีรบุรุษ ความองอาจกล้าหาญ ความอดทน ความตั้งใจ ความอุตสาหะพยายาม ความมุ่งมั่นตั้งใจ ความทะเยอทะยาน ความเฉลียวฉลาด ความอุดมสมบูรณ์ ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง ความมั่งคั่ง การมีอายุยืนยาวราวอมตะ และโชคลาภวาสนาบารมี

ในศาสตร์ของชาวจีน มังกรคือสัตว์ประจำชาติ ราชาของสิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งปวง เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของจักรพรรดิและอำนาจอันยิ่งใหญ่ของฮ่องเต้ (皇帝) ผู้เป็นโอรสจุติมาจากสวรรค์ ดั่งที่เห็นได้จาก "บัลลังก์มังกร" หนึ่งในพระที่นั่งที่ทรงอำนาจที่สุดในโลกแห่งพระราชวังต้องห้าม (紫禁城)ชาวจีนนั้นเชื่อกันมาช้านานว่ามังกรนั้นมีตบะเดชะในทางปัดเป่าวิญญาณร้าย ปกป้องผู้บริสุทธิ์ และคอยคุ้มครองผู้ที่มีสื่อสัญลักษณ์ของมังกรไว้กับตัว นอกจากนี้มังกรยังมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับพระโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม ตามตำนานหลายตำนาน เช่นว่ามังกรคือสัตว์ชั้นเทพที่บำเพ็ญตบะหลายพันปี จนสามารถเหาะขึ้นไปยังสรวงสวรรค์ได้ ทั้งยังได้รับเกียรติให้มีหน้าที่เฝ้าดูแล "ลูกแก้ววิเศษ" และเป็นพระราชพาพนะของพระโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม จากตำนานที่จึงเกิดความเชื่อว่า "มังกรจะมารับผู้ที่มีคุณสมบัติเซียน ไปอยู่บนสรวงสวรรค์  ซึ่งผู้ที่มีศีล มีสัตย์ มีจิตใจบริสุทธิ์ดีงามเท่านั้น จึงจะมีโอกาสได้ขี่หลังมังกร"

"Dragon" has been taken as a symbol of special phenomena, deity's attributes and many of the great conditions that human beings have defined, such as power, noble, virtue, goodness, decisiveness, greatness, strength, heroism, courage, patience, determination, perseverance, ambition, ingenuity, abundance, prosperity, wealth, immortal, longevity, fortune and prestige.

In Chinese belief, the dragon is the national animal, the king of all living things. It is a symbol of the emperor and the great power of Huángdì (皇帝), the son of heaven as can be seen from "The Dragon's Throne", one of the most powerful thrones in the world of the Forbidden City (紫禁城). The Chinese have long believed that dragons have the power to fend off evil spirits, protect innocent people and support those who carry the symbol of the dragon with them. Dragons are also associated with Guan Yin Bodhisattva, according to many legends. One legend said that a dragon is a divine beast that has been ascetic for thousands of years until able to fly up to heaven. That dragon is also honored to have a duty to look after the "Magic Crystal Ball" and also be the royal vehicle of Guan Yin Bodhisattva. This legend causes the belief that “The dragon will pick up those with saint qualifications to heaven where only those who are virtuous, honest, have a pure heart will have the opportunity to ride on the dragon's back."
