พระอวโลกิเตศวร เป็นหนึ่งในพระโพธิสัตว์ของพุทธศาสนามหายานที่มีคนรู้จักและศรัทธามากที่สุด เป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ในรูปความกรุณาของบรรดาพระพุทธเจ้าทั้งปวง ผู้แสดงธรรมอันบริสุทธิ์ซึ่งปราศจากกิเลสตัณหา พระนาม “อวโลกิเตศวร” แปลว่า “พระผู้มองลงต่ำ” หรือ “พระผู้มีแสงสว่าง” เปรียบดั่งผู้ขจัดความทุกข์ของเหล่าสรรพสัตว์ คอยรับฟังเสียงและคำอธิษฐานของสรรพสัตว์ทั้งปวงและนำความสว่างมาให้แก่ผู้ที่เคารพศรัทธาท่าน ปรากฏการสร้างรูปเคารพของพระองค์แตกต่างหลากหลายไปตามความเชื่อ ในทิเบตนับถือในพระนาม เจนเรอซิก ในศาสนาพุทธแบบจีน แนวคิดของพระอวโลกิเตศวรได้พัฒนาเป็นเทพเจ้าสตรีนามว่า พระแม่กวนอิม ในเนปาลมณฑลรู้จักในนาม ชนะพหะทยา หรือ การุณามานา
